Karen Hurley, president-elect of the National Council of Catholic Women, hand-delivered a pledge of prayer and support to Pope Francis from the 2013 convention of the national organization.

The resolution originated in the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women in the Archdiocese of Portland.

Joan Galles, a member of St. Therese Parish in Northeast Portland and chair of the National Resolutions Committee, proposed the pledge to the membership. It won the vote. Hurley took the resolution to Rome and handed it to Pope Francis.

The document says that the women believe the election of Pope Francis was guided by the Holy Spirit and pledges that members will attend daily Mass, recite the rosary and pray the Liturgy of the Hours as a way to support him.

"Members will ask Mary, Our Lady of Good Counsel, who is the Patroness of the NCCW, to keep Pope Francis under her special protection," the pledge said.
