The number of victims affected by a tax identity fraud security breach at the Archdiocese of Portland has reached into the hundreds, say archdiocesan officials, but there is no official count as of yet.

Both the Archdiocese of Portland and the Archdiocese of Seattle are working with the IRS and the FBI to determine how tax information and social security numbers of church employees and volunteers were stolen and used to file false tax returns.

According to the Archdiocese of Portland's website,, there is no indication of a breach of the` archdiocesan computer network, and according to IRS investigators, the IRS is not currently attributing the security breach to the company that conducts background checks of employees and volunteers.

The archdiocese's finance office is working with the IRS Seattle Office, assisting in collecting and providing information for the ongoing investigation.

As soon as the IRS investigation is complete, the findings will be made public, say officials.
