Bishop Peter Smith, Fr. Amancio Rodrigues and Deacon Jim Pittman lead Mass at Gesthemani Cemetery in Happy Valley.

People gathered today at Catholic cemeteries in the Archdiocese of Portland to remember loved ones who have died.

Bishop Peter Smith concelebrated a Mass at Gesthemani with Father Amancio Rodrigues, whose sister Adelina was buried at the cemetery in February, and Deacon Jim Pittman. Our Lady of Sorrows Parish choir led worshipers in song.

“We like to think we’re very independent in the way we live our lives, especially in this part of the country, with its rugged individualism,” said Bishop Smith. “But it moments like these, we realize how much we are connected, how much we give one another in the way we live and the way we serve.”

Many of the people who were being honored today believed in something greater than themselves.

“The good shepherd lays his life down for his sheep,” Bishop Smith said.

Archbishop Alexander Sample celebrated Mass at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Portland. A service was also held at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Eugene.
