JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. — Murphy Pfohman, a member of St. Mary Cathedral Parish in Northwest Portland, arrived here last month after a nearly eight-month deployment to Afghanistan.

The 23-year-old Army second lieutenant/2012 West Point graduate served as a platoon leader in an intelligence unit assigned to a stryker brigade combat team that operated in the southeast part of the country.

The 3,000-member unit is being re- placed by the Germany-based 2nd Cavalry Regiment while U.S. troops draw down their active combat roles.

Lt. Pfohman was greeted at the reception center by eight sergeants from her platoon who arrived at Ft. Lewis the week before. Murphy gave up her seat on the original, overbooked return flight to make room for an enlisted person whose East Coast family was assembling at Ft. Lewis. She spent the six days at Manas, Krygzstan, the military transit center for flights in an out of country, catching up on her reading, sleeping and eating.

After a couple weeks leave, she will begin training at the busy post, for her next assignment. She has four years remaining in her commitment.
