Nike founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, have donated $25 million to Providence Heart and Vascular Institute. That begins a $50 million campaign to advance treatments and innovations in cardiac care.

“The Knights are longtime supporters of Providence and they care deeply about the health and wellness of people everywhere,” said Dave Underriner, chief executive for Providence in Oregon.

The institute is a team of more than 80 physicians, plus specialized nurses, using high tech for treatment and conducting research.

The campaign will fund a major cardiac unit at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, plus upgrades at Providence Portland Medical Center and Providence Medford Medical Center. A large database is part of the project and will help doctors decide what treatments are best for what patients.

Another thrust will be prevention, with a center identifying and treating cardiovascular risk factors. Health providers from the region, including rural areas, will be able to get educated on heart matters at the new centers.
