The annual Archdiocesan Catechetical Conference will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the University of Portland.  The theme for this year’s conference is “Faith Formation: A Lifelong Journey.” 

Keynote addresses will be given in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. There will be 21 workshops and a panel discussion in English, and 21 workshops in Spanish. Check-in begins at 7 a.m., and morning prayer will begin at 7:45 a.m.  Archbishop Alexander Sample will celebrate Mass at 11 a.m. The conference will end at 4 p.m.

The keynote address in English will be given by Lesia Anslinger.  Anslinger is the director of Catholic Life and Faith, a resource center that supports pastoral leaders. Her books and resources address topics ranging from evangelization, catechesis, stewardship, parish engagement and parishioner strength development. She holds a bachelor's degree in Music Education and a master's degree in Secondary School Counseling and Religious Studies.

The Spanish keynote will be presented by Lucia Luzondo. She is the director of Marriage and Family Life Ministry at the Archdiocese of Miami. She also serves as a board member and representative for the Hispanic Section of the National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministers. She is the content development editor of www.portumatrimonio.org, the initiative on marriage in Spanish of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (“USCCB”). 

She is a consultant to the Secretariat for Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth and the Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage of the USCCB.  She is also an author, a singer-songwriter and co-founder of Renovacion Familiar Ministries, where she serves with her husband, Ricardo. She is a retired family law and immigration attorney.

Professor Lê Xuân Hy, will present the Vietnamese keynote presentation. He teaches psychology and pastoral theology, has directed the Catholic Studies Program, and currently heads the Institute for Human Development at Seattle University. He served as a Fulbright Senior Specialist to Israel. He conducts workshops and retreats for various groups in the U.S. and Vietnam, such as the Vietnamese Conference of Major Superiors, Vietnamese seminary professors, and several Jesuit provinces. He has presented topics on Scripture and human development at Vietnamese American National Catechetical Conferences for 20 years.

Workshop presenters will include Dorothy Coughlin, Father John Henderson, Jason Kidd, Sarah Kresse, St. John Society Father Federico Pinto, Missionaries of the Rosary of Fatima Sister Gabriela Mendoza Lopez, and Deacon Bill Richardson among many others.

A complete brochure of workshops and instructions for selecting workshops are available on the website for the Archdiocesan Office of Religious Education, www.archdpdx.org/rel-ed.  The website also includes a link for the on-line registration process.  The registration fee is $50 for those registered by Oct. 6, and $75 for those registered by Oct. 13, both of which include lunch. Those registering after October 13 and walk-in registrations will be charged $75, but lunch is not guaranteed.
