Cardinal Francis George

Cardinal Francis George, leader of the Archdiocese of Chicago and former archbishop of the Archdiocese of Portland, will not appear this Friday at Mount Angel Seminary for a dinner marking the hilltop seminary's 125th anniversary.

Cardinal George, 77, is preparing to undergo a new round of chemotherapy to address “current signs of activity of cancer cells surrounding his right kidney.”

He was diagnosed with urothelial cancer in August 2012 and underwent chemotherapy at that time. The cancer, dormant for over a year, is still confined to the area of his right kidney.
