Archbishop Alexander Sample will lead six regional meetings during January to brief Catholic leaders on an upcoming collection that funds ministries in the Archdiocese of Portland.

Priests, parish council members and church administrators will attend sessions on the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. In a memo to parishes, the archbishop said he wants to meet "so that together we can speak to the common and important work of our Catholic Church in western Oregon supported by this important appeal."

Meetings begin at 7 p.m. and are set for:

• Monday, Jan. 13 at St. Paul Parish in Eugene.
• Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Sacred Heart Parish in Medford.
• Tuesday, Jan. 21 at St. Luke Parish in Woodburn.
• Monday, Jan. 27 at St. Pius X Parish in Northwest Portland.
• Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the Pastoral Center in Northeast Portland.
• Wednesday, Jan. 29, at St. Therese Parish in Northeast Portland.

The archbishop will thank leaders for their work in shared ministries.

Doug Tollefson, director of resource development for the archdiocese, says it's important for the archdiocese's ministries that leaders embrace the annual appeal.

Coming up is a bulletin insert for all Catholics, complete with a QR code that will bring digital device users to a video about the projects supported by the collection. The video also will be available at

The collection this year focuses on Catholic campus ministry and developing vocations to the priesthood.

The archdiocese has active campus ministries at almost every college and university in western Oregon. The video highlights Western Oregon University in Monmouth and George Fox University in Newberg. At both schools, students receive practical support and ongoing catechesis.

In recent years, the archdiocese has welcomed a steady stream of ordinations and incoming seminarians. But vocations are a constant concern and educating future priests is expensive. The video tells the story of several young men who are discerning a priestly vocation.

"We are all one in mission, and one in heart and mind, as we endeavor to continue and expand the important work of the New Evangelization in our parishes, cities and towns throughout western Oregon," the archbishop writes in the bulletin insert.

The weekend of Feb. 22-23 will be Commitment Sunday for this year’s Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal.
