Archbishop Alexander Sample visited the Federal Corrections Institution in Sheridan this afternoon, celebrating a Mass for inmates at the medium security prison.

The facility, the only federal facility in Oregon, houses a total of 1,835 inmates. More than 1,300 inmates stay at the  detention center, while more than 500 live and work at a nearby minimum security prison camp.

Current inmates include Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a U.S. citizen convicted in 2013 of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction for trying to detonate what he thought was a card bomb supplied by undercover FBI agents posing as members of Al-Qaeda at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland in 2010.
